815 Dental Studio
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth to cover and protect the tooth, to restore its size and shape, strength, and improve its appearance. A crown is essentially a cap for a damaged tooth. When cemented into place, the dental crown will fully encase the entire exposed part of the tooth above the gum line.

When our team evaluates the crowns of your teeth, we are referencing the portion of your tooth that is visible above the gumline. When this part is damaged, a dental crown can protect the remaining natural tooth. Crowns are custom shaded to match your teeth and can be fabricated using a variety of materials such as ceramic, porcelain, resin, or metal.
815 Dental Studio will recommend a dental crown if a tooth is damaged from cracking, decay, or significant fractures. Dental crowns will also improve the appearance of an unsightly tooth and protect weak areas.
Would You Benefit from a Dental Crown?
A dental crown might be beneficial in the following situations:
- To protect a weakened tooth from breaking or to hold together a cracked tooth.
- To protect a tooth with a large filling when there is limited natural tooth remaining.
- To restore a tooth that has become severely worn.
- On neighboring teeth to support a dental bridge.
- To attain a desired cosmetic improvement.
- To cover a misshapen or a discolored tooth.
- As the crown for a dental implant restoration.
- For your child, a dental crown can be used on primary baby teeth.
- To save a tooth that is so damaged by decay that it cannot support a filling.
- For a child unable to meet the requirements of continued dental care because of age, behavior, or medical history.
The Different Materials Used for a Dental Crown
Various kinds of materials can be used in the fabrication of crowns, including:
- composite resin
- a combination of materials
When choosing the suitable material for your crown, 815 Dental Studio will consider factors such as:
- The position of the tooth in your mouth.
- Is the tooth visible during your smile?
- The health condition of your gum tissue.
- The biting and chewing function of the tooth that needs the crown.
- How much of the natural tooth remains?
- The shade and color of the surrounding natural teeth.
Our team will also discuss with you if you have a personal preference.

The Dental Crown Procedure
Preparing the tooth for a dental crown could require two visits, the first being the examination and the preparation of the tooth, the second visit being the final placement of the permanent dental crown.
At the first visit in preparation for the crown, we take X-rays to confirm the condition of the roots of the tooth. If the tooth has extensive decay or if there is a risk of infection to the tooth's pulp, a root canal treatment should precede the crown to save the natural tooth.
Before we begin the procedure, 815 Dental Studio will administer a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and the soft tissue. Next, the enamel is removed and is reshaped to allow room for the crown. If a large amount of the tooth is missing, we will add filling material to build the tooth up to support the dental crown.
After this prep work, we make an impression of the tooth. Sometimes a digital scanner can capture this impression. Impressions of the adjoining teeth are also made to ensure that the crown will not affect your bite alignment. We will also select the correct shade that matches the color of your teeth.
The impressions are sent to a dental lab, where the crown will be fabricated and returned in a few weeks. We will also make a temporary crown to protect the tooth while the permanent crown is being created. Temporary crowns are made of acrylic.
During your second visit, 815 Dental Studio will remove the temporary crown and then confirm the fit and color of your permanent crown. If everything meets our approval, the new crown is permanently cemented in place.
