Dental fillings are instrumental in repairing small holes in teeth that are from decay. Decay is from bacterial infections. Bacteria stubbornly stays on your teeth when you do not brush or floss properly. Plaque can also develop from a poor diet, lifestyle habits, medications, drug use, medical conditions, and more. A dental filling covers an exposed hole in your tooth to protect the sensitive pulp and to prevent further damage from occurring.

There are a few different dental procedures that we can use to treat tooth decay. One of the most common treatments is a dental filling. Dental cavities are quite common. According to recent research, around 92 percent of U.S. adults ages 20 to 64 have experienced a cavity. A dental filling helps prevent further decay and allows the tooth to function normally. Dental fillings have improved with technology, and it is now quicker and easier to have a cavity treated at 815 Dental Studio than ever.

How Do You Know You Could Have a Cavity?

If you schedule regular checkups with 815 Dental Studio, we will identify cavities early. The sooner we can treat a cavity, the better the outcome will be, and the treatment will be less invasive. Just another good reason to schedule regular dental checkups.

Here are some signs of a cavity developing:

  • A tooth is becoming sensitive to hot or cold foods and drinks.
  • You feel a constant ache in the tooth.
  • There is an increase in sensitivity to sugary foods and drinks.
  • The color of the tooth does not look normal, it appears either whiter or even a darker color.
  • There is an obvious hole or pit in the tooth.

Your team at 815 Dental Studio will use a small, handheld mirror and explorer to examine the surfaces of each tooth, and anything that looks abnormal will be confirmed with an x-ray. Your dental filling treatment will depend on the extent of the damage and the type of filling we choose together.

The Different Types of Dental Fillings

There are a few types of dental fillings used. These vary from a traditional metal filling to a more popular composite filling.

  • Silver-color fillings- Composed of metal amalgams, which is a combination of silver, mercury, tin, and copper.
  • White tooth-color fillings, or composites- This material is a combination of glass or quartz particles and an acrylic resin. It is a durable material that is the best option for dental fillings.
  • Porcelain fillings- These look very natural and are more expensive. They are created in a lab after we provide an impression of your tooth.
  • Glass ionomer fillings- These fillings are also tooth-colored but not as strong as composites. They are composed of acrylic and a type of glass that contains fluoride, which will help prevent further cavities. They are most often used for children’s teeth.
  • Gold fillings- This combination of gold, copper, and other metals is durable but more expensive. They are also not natural looking. Gold fillings are created in a dental lab after we take an impression of your tooth.

The Dental Filling Procedure

The dental filling procedure is quite simple. To start, your team at 815 Dental Studio will examine your teeth and use small, handheld dental instruments to identify the cavity. We will take an X-ray of the tooth to confirm the extent of the tooth decay.

The administration of a local anesthetic to numb the immediate area is the next step in preparation. This will prevent any discomfort during the procedure.

Once the area is sufficiently numb, we will use a high-speed dental drill to remove the decay. Then we will sterilize and prepare the area for the filling. Once placed, some types of fillings are cured or hardened with a blue wavelength light.

After the filling has been placed in the hole, we polish the tooth and confirm that your bite alignment is correct.

Dental Fillings Aftercare

After your dental filling is completed, you could continue to have a slight numbing sensation in the area for a few hours. When the numbness has subsided, you can resume all daily activities. You will treat your new filling no differently than the rest of your teeth. With constant daily brushing and flossing, you will ensure your dental filling lasts for quite some time. You might experience some minor sensitivity following your treatment. This is common and will subside after some time. If you have discomfort in the area, bring it to our attention.

During your regular exams and check-ups with 815 Dental Studio, we will always check the integrity of the filling and make sure no further decay is evident.
