A root canal is a treatment for the infected pulp of a tooth which results in the elimination of infection and the protection of the tooth from any future infection. Root canals are also called root canal therapy, endodontic therapy, endodontic treatment, or root canal treatment.

Root canals are a common procedure that unfortunately is the only way to save a natural tooth once bacteria have infected the pulp. If a root canal is not performed, the solution will be an extraction.

How Do You Know You Need a Root Canal?

To determine if you might need a root canal, you need to be aware of the symptoms of the infected pulp of a tooth.

Most often, it is obvious that something is wrong when the pulp becomes infected. This is because there is an incredibly good chance you will be experiencing a great deal of discomfort, or even throbbing pain.

Symptoms of an infected tooth pulp include:

  • A severe and throbbing toothache.
  • Pain when you attempt to bite or chew.
  • Pain when you apply any pressure to the tooth.
  • A sudden and extreme sensitivity to hot or cold.
  • Swelling with your gums.
  • A change in the color or shade of the tooth.

If you experience any of these symptoms, we suggest you call for an appointment with 815 Dental Studio as soon as possible.

It is also important to understand why a root canal needs to be performed. Some of the reasons include:

  • Increasing infection with the tooth and even neighboring tissue.
  • The progression of tooth decay.
  • Painful trauma to the tooth.
  • An irreparable fracture of the tooth.
  • A dead nerve in the tooth.

Do not avoid the symptoms. Call 815 Dental Studio to take care of your infected tooth as soon as possible.

The Root Canal Therapy Procedure

The first step is visiting 815 Dental Studio for an immediate examination. At this evaluation, we will examine the tooth, identify, and clarify the problem. If it is only minor decay, you will just need the decay removed and then a cavity filled. If the pulp is infected, we then determine if we can save the tooth.

Once we determine to proceed with a root canal, we will begin by administering a local anesthesia to both relieve and to prevent any further discomfort. Once the tooth and the surrounding tissue is sufficiently numb, we will drill a small hole in the crown and then remove the pulp from the pulp chamber and the roots. We will then disinfect the chamber and the entire root canal system. After the chamber and the root canals are clean, we fill the vacant system with a rubbery like material. We finish the root canal by sealing the tooth to prevent any further infection. If the tooth has been severely weakened, your team at 815 Dental Studio will recommend placing a dental crown over the tooth to protect and strengthen the tooth. Most root canals are completed in just one visit.

Is Root Canal Therapy Painful?

Comparatively speaking, the actual treatment to remove the infection is painless relative to having the infection in the tooth. Do not allow the fear of a root canal prevent you from receiving the proper care. If you elect to avoid the root canal, there is a particularly good chance the tooth will become damaged such that it cannot be saved. At this point, your only option will be an extraction. The dental industry term for a root canal for a child is called pulpotomy.
