What Should You Expect at a Regular Dental Visit?
If you haven’t visited the dentist in a while, it’s understandable if you are wondering what a cleaning and examination look like. There are some general expectations that you may have when visiting your dentist for a regularly scheduled visit for a cleaning and checkup.
What Should You Expect at a Regular Dental Visit?
Here is the most common series of events that you can expect during a regular dental visit.
Examination
Once you’ve checked in, your hygienist will show you to your dental chair. They will then begin your examination. If it has been a while, this may include them taking X-rays. During the examination, you can expect your hygienist to take a look at your teeth and gums. They will be able to uncover potential oral health issues that can later be discussed with your dentist.
Cleaning
Once the initial examination has been completed, your hygienist will begin your teeth cleaning. During this step, your teeth and gums will be cleaned with professional equipment. Your teeth will then be polished.
Dentist Examination
Finally, your dentist will perform an examination and review any X-rays (if they were taken). If any issues are found, they will help put together a treatment plan.
The entire process is generally around 30-60 minutes.
When Should I Visit the Dentist?
If you haven’t visited your dentist in around six months, it’s time for a regularly scheduled cleaning and examination. With that said, your dentist may recommend even more frequent visits. This is particularly the case after more advanced oral healthcare procedures have been performed.
Between regularly scheduled visits, you also may need to visit the dentist. If you are experiencing pain, discomfort, bleeding, pus, or other annoyances, schedule a visit for an examination. It’s best to catch any issues early on.
If more severe issues are occurring, you may need to schedule an emergency dentistry visit. If your teeth are loose, have fallen out, or have been knocked out, or if you are experiencing severe pain, you should contact an emergency dentist.
At-Home Care
Along with regularly scheduled cleanings and checkups, you’ll want to take proper care at home to ensure the health and longevity of your smile. This includes brushing twice a day, flossing, and rinsing your mouth. Make sure you are thorough during your at-home cleaning efforts.
